Members of the California Lawyers’ Association, Workers’ Compensation Section, Community Outreach Subcommittee participated in Southwestern School of Law’s annual Succeeding in Law event on February 24, 2022.  The event is designed to promote a more diverse and inclusive student body among law students.   Representing the CLA WC Section was the Honorable Sharon Velzy, Presiding Judge of the Van Nuys District Office of the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, Amy Shen, Chairwoman of the Community Outreach subcommittee and member of the Boxer Gerson firm of Oakland, California, and Saro Kerkonian, advisor to the CLA WC Section and a member of the High Exposure Attorney Team at Stratman & Williams-Abrego in Los Angeles.  Students were introduced to the field of workers’ compensation law by the speakers.  The students were informed about opportunities for internship, the different types of careers available in workers’ compensation and they were given a broad overview of what can be expected in the daily practice area of workers’ compensation.   Students also had the opportunity to pose questions of the panelists during which they were provided guidance for their future endeavors.

Southwestern Law School Vice-Dean Anahid Gharakhanian expressed her gratitude to the speakers by stating, “Please accept a heartfelt thank you for your dedication and passion to help mentor and insure the next generation of attorneys.  I greatly appreciate your time and care to share information and guidance about your career paths and the myriad ways that a J.D. could be used for impactful and fulfilling work.”

Presiding Judge Velzy commented that “it’s so wonderful to have participated again this year in this fantastic event for the students.   This exceptional program draws more and more students each year because it provides the students with a broad introduction to the law school experience and potential careers in the field of law.   The Workers’ Compensation Section, Community Outreach Committee, is honored to be a part of this event and we look forward to our future participation.”
