Community Outreach Subcommittee: Giving Back

MARIA A. SAGER, ESQ.

Oakland, California

In November of 2014 the Executive Committee of the Workers’ Compensation Section of the State Bar created the Community Outreach subcommittee. Yvonne Lang’s 2015 article in Volume 28, No.4, of the Workers’ Compensation Quarterly, titled, "View from the Incoming Chair," introduced it to you, and I have had the privilege of chairing it for its first two years. This subcommittee was created as a result of the emphasis the Board of Trustees of The State Bar of California placed on protecting the public and encouraging lawyers to give back to their communities. Why give back? According to Stephanie Watson, executive director of Harvard Women’s Health Watch, in the Harvard Health Publications article "Volunteering May Be Good for Body and Mind" (posted on June 26, 2013, and updated October 29, 2015):

A second reason to give back is to help improve the public perception of lawyers. (Just think of all the lawyer jokes you have heard!)
