The AMA Guides, Fifth Edition, on page 3, define disability as "an alteration of an individual’s capacity to meet personal, social, or occupational demands because of an impairment." On page 2 the Guides define an impairment as "a loss, loss of use, or derangement of any body part, organ system, or organ function." The Guides go on to state that a "complete impairment evaluation" includes a discussion about the applicant’s abilities and limitations (section 1.12, p. 15), keeping in mind the potential for impairment aggravation (section 1.9, p. 13).
