Trusts and Estates

Ca. Trs. & Estates Quarterly 2020, Volume 26, Issue 3

FROM THE CHAIR

By Mark S. Poochigian, Esq.*

My one-year term as Chair of the Executive Committee of the Trusts and Estates Section (TEXCOM) is nearly complete, so this column is my final one in that role. TEXCOM’s work on behalf of the Trusts and Estates Section is a true "team effort," dependent on the contributions of all of its members. As the Chair, you have a unique bird’s eye view of the work that is done by so many dedicated volunteers. After discussing some of TEXCOM’s efforts on behalf of Section members in this unusual year, this column will turn to thanking my TEXCOM colleagues for all of their hard work over the past year.

A year ago, no one could have predicted the disruption that would be wrought on our communities and professional practices by COVID-19 during these last several months. Despite the shelter-in-place orders and related office and court closures, TEXCOM members consistently answered the call this year to make time to serve their fellow Section members. TEXCOM’s important work in the legislative arena continued uninterrupted, with TEXCOM remaining highly engaged on matters pending before the California Legislature that are of interest to trusts and estates practitioners. Although certain planned live educational programs were required to be postponed, Section members continued to have access to regular and timely educational offerings in the form of monthly webinars offered by the Section. Also, TEXCOM quickly mobilized on a number of initiatives related to COVID-19, including efforts to allow for remote notarization of documents during the declared emergency, and commenting on the emergency Rules of Court related to COVID-19 to advocate for clarity in their application to trust and probate proceedings.

These efforts have required every TEXCOM member to take and pull on the proverbial oar. To all of the members of TEXCOM: you have my deepest gratitude for your hard work over the course of the last year under difficult circumstances; I very much appreciate your devotion to our common undertaking, benefiting Section members and their clients in many ways. To our Section members and readers: if you know any TEXCOM members, I hope that you will join me in thanking them for their service to our Section the next time you see them.
