Taxation

Ca. Tax Lawyer 2016, VOLUME 25, NUMBER 1

Message from the Chair

By Robert S. Horwitz

The California Tax Bar is second to none. This statement may seem like braggadocio, coming as it does from the Chair of the State Bar Taxation Section, but it is true. The quality of the tax practitioners in California is exemplified by the award recipients at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bar and California Tax Policy Conference: Doug Youmans, recipient of the V. Judson Klien Award, Martin Schainbaum, recipient of the Joanne Garvey Award, and Patrick J. Kusiak, recipient of the Benjamin F. Miller award. Doug is a former chair of the Taxation Section, a partner in Wagner Kirkman Blaine Klomparens & Youmans LLP, and a highly regarded attorney specializing in tax and estate planning, tax controversy, and business planning. Marty is the principal of Martin A. Schainbaum, APC, and one of the leading criminal and civil tax trial attorneys in the United States. Pat is Of Counsel, Legal Division, California Franchise Tax Board. He has dedicated his career to public service, first with the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Navy and, for the past 22 years, with the Legal Division of the Franchise Tax Board.

The quality of the California Tax Bar is also reflected in the quality of the educational programs put on by the Taxation Section. This includes webinars, the annual Estate & Gift Tax Conference, the annual Income Tax Conference, and the Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bar and California Tax Policy Conference. The Annual Meeting draws a large number of government speakers from the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Justice, the United States Tax Court, the United States Attorney’s Office, the Franchise Tax Board and the California State Board of Equalization. No other state bar tax section offers an annual meeting with educational opportunities comparable to those offered by The State Bar of California Taxation Section. A complete report on this year’s Annual Meeting by Betty Williams and Valerie Dickerson appears in this issue.

The Taxation Section is already planning the 2016 annual meeting. If there is a specific topic that you believe should be the subject of a panel, please email the appropriate standing committee chair. The standing committee chairs are listed at http://taxation.calbar.ca.gov/Committees/StandingCommitteeOfficers.aspx.
