#SDMETRO: A Guide to San Diego

By Ben Aguilar

Ben Aguilar is the owner and founder of the Law Offices of Ben Aguilar in downtown San Diego. His law practice focuses on family law and immigration law cases. Ben currently serves on the Thomas Jefferson School of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, the San Diego County Bar Association New Lawyer’s Division, Tom Homann LGBT Bar Association Board of Directors, and co-chairs the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association Community Outreach committee.

Adecade ago, when I left San Diego for Orange County, San Diego was in the midst of an unprecedented overhaul. Developers were turning skeletal factories and empty buildings that served as housing for homeless into luxurious lofts, trendy shops, and hip restaurants and bars.

Upon returning to San Diego only 4 years later, San Diego had advanced so rapidly that it took quite some time to catch up with all that the city had to offer. When asked to write this piece, I knew it would be almost impossible to cover all neighborhoods in the county. Given that most of the individuals reading this article will only have a limited amount of time to explore the city between meetings, mixers, and dinners, I decided to cover what defines SDMETRO – an au courant shorthand that denotes its hip hashtag status. If you are a social media user, I invite you to use the hashtag #SDMETROCalBar if you visit any of these neighborhoods and some of my favorite establishments.
