Cal. Real. Prop. Journal 2018, VOL. 36, NO. 2

State of the Real Property Law Section 2018

Gary M. Laturno, 2017-2018 Co-Chair

My service as the Real Property Law Section (RPLS) Co-Chair ends on September 16, 2018. Christina Sansone, Editor in Chief of the California Real Property Journal, asked me to write a short "good bye" State of the Real Property Law Section message. I am happy to comply. Hopefully, future chairs will submit similar a message as their term ends.

In 2017, before being appointed by the ExCom as co-chairs, Christine Gregorak and I were aware that there was "plenty of work to go around," given that the California Lawyers Association ("CLA") would become a reality on January 1, 2018. Christine agreed to focus on our Section’s role in getting the newly formed CLA off the ground and running. A big job. In addition, she agreed to chair the REAL Symposium held each year on the Stanford University campus. Another big job. Christine’s time and commitment to our Section has been huge; her friendship and counsel greatly appreciated. REAL is a highly popular and successful symposium that the RPLS and Stanford Professionals in Real Estate co-sponsor annually. I agreed to focus on RPLS statewide member activities, MCLE programs, the Annual Retreat (now the Spring Conference), webinars, networking events, the Journal, and our monthly E Bulletin.

We started the year by reaching out to all Real Property Law Section ("RPLS") members and inviting them to become active in our Section. "Interested in getting involved in our Section? We would love to hear from you!" It worked. A significant number of attorneys of all ages, genders and backgrounds contacted us. Members who have never been involved in our Section are now teaching webinars and organizing live MCLE programs and networking events. We are thrilled.
