MCLE Self-Study Article: The Advanced Persistent Attack and What Your Law Firm Should Do

By Robert Rebhan

On Monday morning when Elaine Campos arrived at her office, the French roast was brewed and seven of her nine staff members were busy getting ready for an upcoming trial. It was going to be a busy day at the law firm she owned in Los Angeles County.

Looking as confident as Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, Elaine navigated her way to her private office with a cup of black coffee. She paused before shutting her office door and warned her assistant Nicole, she shouldn’t be disturbed for the next few hours. She had to get payroll details and billing data out to her provider.

Fifteen minutes later when the door opened abruptly Nicole looked at her boss and immediately thought heart attack. She jumped up bolting to Elaine’s side. She took Elaine by the arm, steadying the normally unflappable woman. Elaine sat on the edge of her assistant’s desk. “Phone 911,” she breathed. “We’ve been robbed.”
