New Matter SUMMER 2017 Volume 42, Number 2

Letter from the Chair

ELIZABETH J. REST
Crown, LLP

Dear Section Member:

In my last two Letters from the Chair, I reported that the State Bar is experiencing significant change that will have, and already has had, a substantial impact on the Intellectual Property Law Section. Presently, the Bar and all of the Sections have been exploring whether the Sections should separate from the State Bar and create an independent trade association.

Since my last Letter, a decision has been made that the Sections will separate from the State Bar and form a new entity. This is likely to become effective in January of 2018, although this date may change. While previously the Bar and the Sections had been exploring two proposals for the anticipated separation – (1) the Sections would become a legislatively created public entity, separate from the State Bar; or (2) the Sections would become a private 501(c)(6) non-profit corporation – it has now been determined that the only option for moving forward is a private non-profit corporation.
