Message From the Chair

"This is an era of specialists, each of whom sees his own problem and is unaware of or intolerant of the larger frame into which it fits . . . We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts. The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road, and it can do so only when in full possession of the facts."

— Rachel Carson, SILENT SPRING 13 (1962)

Carson reminds us to make our decisions in "full possession of the facts" while warning us to be wary of over-specialization when it cannot see beyond its own framing of the world. This resonates with me for several reasons, one of which is the value the Environmental Law Section adds to my professional life.

When I come away from an issue of Environmental Law News or one of our various conferences and events, I am grateful that so many of you share your expertise with our legal community, so that we can move towards a more "full possession of the facts." I am also grateful for the interactions that I experience through the section’s work, regularly challenging me to see beyond my specialization.

The Environmental Law Section has been a great source of community for so many of us within our profession, and we invite you to join us in the coming year. One opportunity is for you to write an article for a future edition of Environmental Law News. Our section will be sharing numerous opportunities for our members to get more involved in the coming months on our website, eNews, and social media. If you have questions about any of these opportunities or are ready to volunteer, reach out to us at

We look forward to collaborating with you!
