Executive Committee: Message from the Chair

Charles E. McKee

The State Bar year is coming to a close, and now it is time to start thinking about the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting will be held September 11-14, 2014, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in beautiful San Diego. The Business Law Section will be presenting eleven cutting-edge programs at the Annual Meeting. These programs include one from each of the Partnerships and LLCs Committee (LLC Operating Agreements Under RULLCA), the Corporations Committee (Advising Newly Formed Corporations), the Cyberspace Committee (Recent Developments in Intellectual Property, E-Commerce, and Privacy), the Consumer Financial Services Committee (New Developments in Consumer Arbitration Clauses), the Corporations Committee (Recent Developments in Securities Law), and the Agribusiness Committee (Dealing with Unauthorized Dealerships). In addition, the Insolvency Committee will present five programs for bankruptcy specialty credit.

If you have never been to an Annual Meeting, you definitely should consider attending this one. The Annual Meeting will offer enough MCLE to fulfill your requirements for the year. In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones as well—since the Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of attorneys in California during the year. You will also be able to sample all of the entertainment options offered by San Diego, such as the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and the USS Midway aircraft carrier, as well as shopping, fine dining, and first class night life. The Annual Meeting will also offer luncheons with renowned speakers, receptions and award ceremonies, law school alumni groups, and more.

While you are at the Annual Meeting, plan to attend the BLS Breakfast on Saturday morning (this is a day change from prior years). It is always a great event, and is well attended by many BLS members with an engaging speaker. This year the featured speaker is Professor Peter Menell, Koret Professor of Law at UC Berkeley School of Law, who will be speaking on the timely subject of "The Trouble with Patent Trolls." In addition, we will present the Lifetime Achievement Award. Get your tickets early to reserve your space.
