Executive Committee: Message from the Chair

Robert V. Hawn

It is a distinct pleasure and honor to present to you this issue of the Business Law News, the flagship publication of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California. This issue represents the depth of business law practice in California, covering issues ranging from fiscal sponsorship to equitable subordination. California ranks as the eighth largest economy in the world, according to the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy, and the businesses that we represent every day show our State’s variety and vitality. The Business Law News and the Business Law Section, however, represents something far more important than the robust business climate in which we practice.

The Section is an 8,500 member organization that is served by its real heroes: our volunteers. More than 250 attorneys work to present continuing legal education in both basic and cutting edge areas, create reports and reference materials for our daily practice, and make technical corrections to statutes to add clarity to our laws. Our volunteers work through our fifteen Standing Committees. If you look at the inside back cover of this issue, you will see a list of each one. The name of each committee describes the area in which it concentrates, and the long list of committees illustrate the vast reach the Section has in business law practice.

Our volunteers represent some ofthe top practitioners and thought leaders in California business law and our Section is the stronger for having them with us. With the demands placed on them by their practice and other obligations, you wonder why they would join a Standing Committee and devote their time to our Section, and why you would want to join them in a committee’s work. Let me give you some reasons.
