Letter from the Chair

Dear IP Section Members,

I wanted to start by taking a moment to say that my thoughts, and the thoughts of all of us here at the IP Section, are with those impacted by the tragic wildfires in the Los Angeles area. There are very few of us who do not have colleagues, family, friends, or loved ones who have been impacted by these catastrophic fires. We offer our condolences to all those who have been impacted by these horrific events. For those in need of legal assistance, the State Bar of California offers a number of free resources which can be found here.

In the face of this unbelievable adversity, the way California has come together as a community in response to this disaster has been truly inspiring. I have been blown away by the generosity and kindness of the people around me.

With that said, the IP section continues to move forward with an eye to the substantial changes on the horizon. We know that, as attorneys, staying ahead of that type of change is critical to providing the best advice possible to our clients. We are always committed to offering programming keeping you apprised of the new waves of litigation, law, regulations and more. More importantly, we’re committed to providing a community for the incredible IP attorneys of California.

On that point, if you’re looking to meet with California IP attorneys and stay on top of the most recent developments in intellectual property, there is no better place than our flagship program—the IP Institute.  The 48th Annual IP Institute will be held on March 6-8th, 2025, in beautiful Long Beach. We have an all-star set of speakers, including Professor David Nimmer and former GC to the U.S Copyright Office and current Partner at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein + Selz, Jacqueline Charlesworth. We are also fortunate enough to have as our keynote speaker immediate past Director of the USPTO, current partner at Winston & Strawn, Kathi Vidal. Registration is open and can be found on the IP Section’s website, along with sponsorship opportunities for those interested.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Section, perhaps the best way is to join or volunteer with one of our many Interest Groups. We have interest groups ranging from Copyright, Patent, and Trademark to more practice-focused groups such as AI, Entertainment and Sports Law and Technology, Internet and Privacy. There’s sure to be something to suit your particular practice. These Interest Groups have frequent calls and webinars, but if you’re interested in getting more involved—whether by suggesting programming or otherwise—you can find the contact information for our incredible IG Officers on our website. I myself originally got involved by volunteering with the Entertainment and Sports IG and the connections I made doing so have been invaluable. The deadline for applications to serve on our Executive Committee is March 1st; if you’re interested you can find the application here.

All the best,

Jon Lurie
