Webinar: Presenting and Preparing for Appellate Oral Argument

This program offers 1.5 participatory MCLE credits; 1.5 legal specialization in Appellate Law.


Join a former Justice pro tem and an experienced appellate specialist for a 90-minute program on appellate oral argument. The program will cover the purpose of oral argument, preparation for argument, presenting argument, and post-argument matters, sharing advice on best practices and techniques for persuading appellate judges.

Speakers: Benjamin Shatz and Allan Goodman


Benjamin G. Shatz is a Certified Appellate Specialist and co-chair of the Appellate Practice at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips in Los Angeles. He is a member of the American and California Academies of Appellate Lawyers. He has over 25 years of state and federal civil appellate experience and is a frequent lecturer and author on appellate practice.

The Honorable Allan J. Goodman (ret.) is a retired Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court who frequently served as a pro tem Justice on the Court of Appeal (Second District). He joined ADR Services, Inc. in 2019 after nearly 25 years of judicial service and 4 years as an Associate Justice Pro Tem of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District. Before his service on the bench, he was in private practice handling litigation in state and federal courts, and served as Deputy Attorney General for the California Department of Justice, where he argued three cases before the United States Supreme Court.
