Webinar: Handling Public Workplace Violence Issues-Prevention, Preparation and Response
March 18, 2022 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
1 Participatory MCLE Credits
There has been a recent increase in the nature and number of threats and acts of violence directed against elected officials, city councils, administrative agencies, school boards and public employees. Public employers have an ethical, legal, and collective bargained duty to prepare, prevent and properly respond to acts of workplace violence. Public employers in any of the 26-states that have state-specific health and safety agencies applying the federal OSH Act are also subject to increased OSHA enforcement for injuries or deaths related to workplace violence. When the person engaged in workplace violence is an employee, proper coordination of imposing discipline, obtaining workplace violence retraining orders, and prosecuting criminal violations is critical. When the victim is a public official, balancing protection with constitutionally protected rights to protest, criticize and petition government for redress of grievances can become very complex. This workshop will review increased focus on workplace safety, the hallmarks of an effective prevention plan, and steps to resolve unique discipline and civil rights issues when violence occurs or is threatened in the public workplace.
