Free Webinar: From Life as a Lawyer to Life as a Judge to Life as a Neutral

The purpose of the webinar is to educate lawyers on the path from lawyer to judge to neutral and the challenges faced in the transitions.

Hon. Monica Bachner

Hon. Monica Bachner (Ret.) is a mediator, arbitrator and private judge with Judicate West.  Prior to that, she served as a judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court for over 20 years where she presided over criminal and civil courts.  For her last seven years on the court, she presided over an independent calendar civil court where she handled cases involving business, employment, commercial, real estate, and habitability disputes. Judge Bachner’s judicial assignments also include serving as Supervising Judge of the North Valley District and serving as an Associate Justice Pro Tem for the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California where she investigated and tried criminal cases and a civil litigator at the law firm Kadison Pfaelzer.

Judge Bachner has devoted herself to legal education:  she taught trial advocacy at USC Gould School of Law for more than 20 years and chaired the Los Angeles Superior Court ‘s Judicial Education Committee for many years.

Judge Bachner received her B.A. from Harvard University in 1978 and her J.D. from Columbia University in 1981.

Hon. Amy D. Hogue

Hon. Amy D. Hogue (Ret.) is a former complex court jurist admired for her practical approach and sharp legal insight. Before her appointment to the bench, she spent 23 years in private practice, including 12 years as an equity partner at the firm now known as Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, where she was co-chair of the Intellectual Property Group.  Judge Hogue has extensive experience as a mediator, having successfully mediated hundreds of settlements in cases involving commercial disputes, class actions, employment, personal injury, insurance coverage, intellectual property, real estate, and corporate governance. 

During her 20-year judicial career, Judge Hogue presided over a complex civil litigation court handling complex business disputes, coordinated mass torts, construction defect cases, and multitier insurance coverage disputes. 

She graduated from Duke University, summa cum laude, earned an M.Phil from the University of Cambridge England on a Fulbright Scholarship, was a graduate Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Public Policy, and graduated with Honors from Duke University School of Law.
