Webinar: Civility and Professionalism in the Legal Profession: Taking the High Road

Do you have a duty to practice with civility?   Many State Bars have guidelines regarding civility and professionalism.  And some states include civility in the oath to practice law.  In this session, you will learn:

  • Requirements of Bar Associations, regulatory agencies and Courts regarding lawyer civility and professionalism
  • Importance of civility in the legal profession
  • Studies regarding incivility in the legal profession
  • Disciplinary opinions and case law and consequences for lawyer incivility
  • Practical tips to maintain civility when you encounter jerks and bullies

Michelle Galloway

Michelle Greer Galloway’s technology litigation practice focuses on patent litigation and strategic counseling. She also advises clients on legal, strategic and technical issues of information management, including electronically stored information and compliance.  She is a contributing editor of The Sedona Conference Primer on Social Media (1st and 2nd editions).

She also advises clients in the area of risk management, compliance, and ethics. She is the past Chair of the ABA Intellectual Property Section, Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee and Chaired an ABA Task Force regarding USPTO proposed disciplinary rule changes. In 2013, Michelle was awarded the ABA IPL Recognition of Outstanding Leadership Contribution.

Michelle currently serves on the Litigation Executive Committee for the California Lawyers Association and she serves on CLA’s Racial Justice Committee.

Michelle joined Cooley in August 1993 and was a partner of the firm from January 1997 through April 2000. She now serves as of counsel at Cooley while also teaching at Stanford and Santa Clara law schools. Prior to joining Cooley, Michelle was a litigation associate for Brown & Bain, where she focused on patent and copyright litigation. During 1995, she served as an assistant district attorney for the County of San Francisco.
