Webinar: AI 101 for Lawyers: Understanding and Applying Generative AI

This program will introduce lawyers to foundational aspects of Generative AI, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and their applications. Topics cover core AI functionalities, prompting, data privacy, confidentiality, ethical use/bias, intellectual property, and governance for compliance in AI use.  The material explored in this program will set the foundation for future webinars covering the respective highlighted topics in greater depth.

Fredrick Tsang has over 10 years of experience advising both emerging companies and established enterprises on a wide range of intellectual property issues with a focus on AI governance and patent development related to AI inventions.  He brings a unique blend of legal and technical expertise in AI processors, large language models, and AI applications in life sciences, including advancements in drug discovery.  Alongside his legal expertise in AI, Fredrick is one of the few attorneys with hands-on experience in training neural networks and a deep understanding of AI’s inner workings.  He enjoys teaching fellow lawyers how to use AI to improve practice efficiency.  He also serves as a liaison within his firm who helps to bridge the gap in understanding between the legal and technical concepts of various AI-related issues.

Jonathan Joannides is a digital governance lawyer with a Master of Information and Cybersecurity from the University of California, Berkeley. Jonathan began his legal career as an IP and commercial litigator at Wilson Sonsini, later serving as product counsel and privacy/cybersecurity lawyer at Fenwick. Through his solo law practice, he counsels on strategic data privacy, AI and cybersecurity challenges for product development, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance. Certified as an Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US, CIPP/E), he helps clients develop operational programs that align with global standards like GDPR, CCPA, and emerging AI regulations.
