Free Webinar: Think Up, Lean Forward: Walking Lightly Over Terra Firma
July 12 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Free event! Presented by the CLA Health and Wellness Committee
Walking is a dance. Learn to do it gracefully to save your knees, hips, and back. Join us for an insightful hour as we explore the fascinating interplay between walking, posture, memory, and movement. We’ll delve into how our bodies adapt to trauma, the long-term implications of these changes, and strategies to restore confident, balanced walking. This presentation promises to change the way you think about every step you take.
Imagine a world where a single fall changes your entire way of moving. After a major fall, individuals often shift their posture to prevent future tumbles, keeping their weight on the back foot rather than the front. This cautious adjustment remains even as the memory of the fall fades, with the body unconsciously maintaining a protective stance. However, this change creates new risks, as the body’s altered gait can make it difficult to catch oneself in the event of another slip, potentially leading to more severe falls.
Ozzie Gontang, Ph.D.
A psychotherapist and running mentor, Ozzie has spent decades teaching about walking, running, and the fear of falling that has followed all of us unconsciously from childhood. He shares things you can do to walk more lightly over the earth to save your body from joint problems and avert falls.
