Job Title: Web Developer

Reports to: Senior IT Manager

Summary:

The Web Developer will join the California Lawyers Association’s (CLA) Web Team. The Web Developer will perform a wide range of tasks, but the primary day-to-day duties involve maintaining the CLA WordPress websites and developing new features. The initial tasks include updating the code base to ensure the websites can run on WordPress 6.0 and PHP 8.1, improving website SEO, improving website page speed, implementing privacy options, and adding functionality to improve member experience. Proficiency in PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern web development tools and processes is essential to succeeding in this role. This role will help manage CLA’s data, so the candidate must have the ability to perform data analysis, data transformation, and reporting. This position will require up to 10% overnight travel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write well-designed and secure code using best practices for website development, including mobile and responsive site design
  • Develop and implement highly optimized and customizable WordPress sites, themes, plugins, custom post types, page templates, widgets, and content blocks
  • Develop and maintain integrations between CLA websites and third-party APIs
  • Develop or validate testing processes, addressing all browsers and devices to ensure various computers can access websites
  • Review error logs and debug your own code and that of others
  • Maintain updated knowledge of new and emerging industry trends and technology
  • Update web page content while ensuring content is presented in a clear format
  • Ensure website is accessible and conforms to WCAG 2 Level AA
  • Respond to requests from internal staff related to web content or website features
  • Create technical documentation for members and staff
  • Collect data and create reports related to membership data, email marketing, and web traffic
  • Perform other similar or related duties which may not be specifically included within this position description, but which are consistent within the general level of the job and the responsibilities described above

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent experience
  • Preferably a minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role
  • Experience developing themes and plugins for the WordPress CMS
  • Experience writing object-oriented PHP code
  • Strong understanding of web application security principles and best practices
  • Experience using modern PHP and JavaScript tools such as Composer and npm
  • Strong understanding of version control, such as Git
  • Strong understanding of HTML5 and CSS
  • Familiarity with SQL databases
  • Experience interacting with RESTful APIs
  • Knowledge of web servers, including nginx, wp-cli, and caching
  • Ability to use spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Experience creating custom Gutenberg blocks for WordPress sites
  • Experience using scripting languages such as Python to manipulate and transform large data sets
  • Experience creating dashboards with Tableau
  • Ability to perform complex data analysis and troubleshooting

Essential Functions:

  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals
