The California Lawyers Association (CLA) is the Bar association for all California attorneys.  We are a member-driven, mission-focused organization dedicated to the professional advancement of attorneys practicing in the state of California.  CLA has eighteen Sections including the New Lawyers Section (NLS) that share an area of interest in law and each offers top-tier programs, award winning conferences, events, and provides access to outstanding legal resources.  We continuously seek new ways to expand our offerings. Through premier educational, networking, and advocacy opportunities, our members can maintain expertise in their fields, build contacts, and uphold the legal profession and system. CLA also has several initiatives that support its mission of promoting excellence, diversity and inclusion in the legal profession and fairness in the administration of justice and the rule of law.


The Finance Director supports and optimizes our organization’s financial strategies and will oversee all financial functions, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, financial analysis, regulatory filings, income taxes, and treasury. The Finance Director will work closely with the senior executive team in performing long-term financial planning and analysis aimed at identifying risks and opportunities that will ensure there is financial alignment with CLA’s strategic plan.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Direct and evaluate fiscal functions within CLA’s structure, appropriate for a 501(c)(6) organization with a related charitable organization
  • Works with all stakeholders to develop CLA’s annual budget
  • Review CLA’s financial, budgeting, and administrative processes continuously, with the ongoing goal of process and outcome improvements
  • Make financial presentations to the executive team, the Board and others as needed
  • Meet with the major stakeholders to establish relationships and develop a clear understanding of how finance supports each of these areas
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding and assessment of CLA’s financial systems and processes
  • Collaborate and coordinate with outsourced accounting personnel
  • Provide Board education sessions annually, focusing on changes to accounting standards related to nonprofits or IRS tax issues specific to nonprofits
  • Serve as an adviser to the Budget and Finance Committee and serve as the liaison between the investment advisor and the Budget and Finance Committee
  • Contribute to the development and on-going support of the business and strategy of CLA, to include our strategic plan, technology, and revenue growth initiatives
  • Build and maintain effective financial, accounting, and internal control systems and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and Section budgets and actual expenditures
  • Enhance the metrics and measures used to analyze the organization, increasing the sophistication of the current business intelligence system, develop financial dashboards, and oversee the budget software system
  • Advise the executive team, the Board and Section leadership on financial matters
  • Develop a full understanding of the financial workings of CLA and how finance supports the strategy
  • Manage cash flow including review and approval of weekly disbursements, ACH and wire transfers
  • Maintain strong internal controls over all accounting cycles
  • Support the annual independent audit, including drafting the audit report and notes to the financial statements
  • Analyze financial data and present accurate and timely financial reports; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes; and keep the Executive Director well informed on CLA’s financial status


  • A 4-year degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field
  • Certified Public Accountant, preferred
  • Extensive experience with nonprofit organizations, including tax related matters and governance
  • Certified Association Executive (CAE) preferred
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in a leadership role in finance and accounting management
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of GAAP accounting, including a strong background in general ledger, operations (A/R and A/P), audit, taxes and investments, and analytics (business intelligence), as well as standards specific to nonprofit organizations.
  • Critical thinking: making decisions with intention, reflection and reason; clarifying purpose, evaluating alternatives and analyzing risks
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions driven both by data and an understanding of the organization and culture, and approaches finance as a businessperson.
  • Experience with high-level financial software systems (PeopleSoft, Oracle, SAP, Lawson, Prophix, etc.)
  • Experience working with/managing volunteers preferred
  • Proven ability to interact and build strong and credible relationships at all levels
  • Ability to deliver on-time and within budget approved projects within established parameters using own judgment and related work experience in executing responsibilities
  • Participate as an active contributor in the budgeting process (I think they would drive this process see my comment above)
  • Able to interface with a variety of stakeholder groups with different needs and demands to achieve strategic goals
  • Highly driven and results oriented, strong management skills, ability to set and enforce priorities and deadlines. Strong track record as an implementer who thrives on leading a variety of key initiatives concurrently and will work independently to get the job done
  • Ability to manage numerous and varied complex projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and troubleshooting skills
  • Overnight travel required
