Scholarship Application

The California Lawyers Association is pleased to offer tuition scholarships for attendance to the following events:

  • Solo & Small Firm Summit | June 24-25, 2021
  • Annual Meeting | September 23-25, 2021

These scholarships are designed to attract participants who have never attended or would traditionally be unable to attend the Solo & Small Firm Summit or Annual Meeting. CLA encourages law students, newly-licensed attorneys, first time attendees, or practitioners whose financial or professional circumstances would otherwise preclude attendance, to take advantage of this exciting opportunity. Each scholarship covers the participant registration fee for the corresponding event. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 11, 2021.

The Solo and Small Firm Summit provides programs targeted toward legal professionals who work in a solo or small practice firms as well as persons interested in entering or starting that type of practice. The Annual Meeting provides programs designed to address the education and networking needs of law students and attorneys throughout the state. The events include joint programs with California Judges Association as well as business management and technology, substantive law updates, and difficult to obtain MCLE programming. The events’ agendas will also feature virtual networking events and other useful content for law students and attorneys.

The deadline to submit scholarship applications is Friday, June 11, 2021.

Recipient Criteria

Students, new practitioners, and other legal professionals whose financial or professional circumstances may normally preclude attendance at the Solo & Small Firm Summit or Annual Meeting are invited to apply for a tuition scholarship. The Scholarship Committee will review all applications received by the deadline. Scholarships will be awarded based on the following considerations:

  1. Financial Need.
  2. Substantive Interest in Annual Meeting or Solo & Small Firm Practice (for Students and newly licensed attorneys)
  3. Scope of Legal Career and Practice (for Practitioners and other Legal Professionals)
  4. CLA Membership & Support (for Practitioners and other Legal Professionals)
  5. Potential contribution to the diversity of attendees at the Annual Meeting or Solo & Small Firm Summit.
Application

To apply for a 2021 Scholarship, please complete and send the following documents: (1) the Scholarship Application form (below); (2) the Scholarship Questionnaire; and (3) a recent copy of your resume. All application materials must be received by 11:59 PM (PST) on Friday, June 11, 2021 to be considered.

Successful applications will be notified by email after Friday, June 18, 2021.

Additional Considerations
  1. The scholarship only covers the participant registration fee for the Annual Meeting or Solo & Small Firm Summit . Registration fees include admission to all education courses, certificate of virtual attendance for MCLE credit and electronic course materials.
  2. Scholarships are non-transferable and cannot be used or redeemed by non-recipients.
  3. Those receiving scholarships will receive written confirmation via e-mail after Friday, June 18, 2021.
  4. Scholarship recipients who do not wish to attend or are no longer able to attend will forfeit their award. Recipients who are no longer able to attend must notify the Scholarship Committee as soon as possible, by e-mailing: Brianna.Hollingsworth@calawyers.org
  5. All applications must be received by 11:59 PM (PST) by Friday, June 11, 2021 will be considered.

    2021 Event Preference

    CLA is pleased to offer a limited number of registration scholarships to attend the Solo & Small Firm Summit and the Annual Meeting. If selected for a scholarship, please rank which events you are most interested in attending, using a scale of 1 to 3 (wherein “1” = first/highest priority; “2” = second priority, “3” = last priority). Please note: due to the limited number of scholarships, recipients may not receive their first choice — please rank your choices accordingly.




    Scholarship Questionnaire

    Please answer the following questions as accurately and thoroughly as you can in a separate PDF. There is no minimum/maximum word count per response. Failure to include these materials will render your application package incomplete.

    1. Please explain why you are interested in attending the 2021 CLA Solo & Small Firm Summit and/or the Annual Meeting.
    2. Please explain the scope of your legal interests or practice, particularly as they related to the content of the Annual Meeting and/or Solo & Small Firm Summit.
    3. Please explain your specific financial need (i.e. gross annual income or other relevant factors), as well as what portion of your expenses will be paid by other sources (i.e. employer, school, other scholarship opportunity, etc.).
    4. What unique characteristics, perceptions, experiences, or qualifications would you bring to the Annual Meeting and/or Solo & Small Firm Summit?
    5. Are you actively involved in any CLA sections, programs, or related projects? If so, please name them and briefly describe your involvement. If you are not, please describe how this scholarship will improve your participation within CLA or CLA affiliate sections.
    6. Please provide any other information you would like the Scholarship Committee to consider when reviewing your application.
