CLA Symposium at Santa Clara University to Explore Cutting-Edge Solutions for Climate Risk and AI Regulation
Experts to Address Critical Issues in Environmental Risk Disclosure, Data Privacy, and Artificial Intelligence at the ILS Symposium
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 5, 2024) – The International Law and Immigration Section (ILS) of the California Lawyers Association (CLA) is proud to announce today the hosting of its highly anticipated symposium, “Law in an Era of Global Challenges: Climate Risk and AI Regulation” on September 5, 2024, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM at Santa Clara University School of Law. The symposium is open to CLA members, non-members, international delegates, affinity bar associations, and interested media upon request.
In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and escalating climate concerns, the symposium addresses two of the most significant and interconnected challenges facing the global legal community today. With climate risk and artificial intelligence (AI) emerging as key drivers of change, legal professionals must navigate new regulatory landscapes and emerging risks. This event offers a unique platform to explore innovative legal strategies and regulatory approaches that are crucial for adapting to these global challenges.
Key Panels and Discussions:
- Climate Risk Disclosure: Voluntary Reporting vs. Regulatory Imperatives
The first panel will delve into the complexities of environmental risk disclosure, focusing on the balance between voluntary reporting and regulatory mandates. Panelists Nilmini Silva-Send, Professor of Practice at the University of San Diego, and Vineet Shahani, General Counsel at Mill, will discuss the implications of California’s new climate disclosure laws and the broader impact on corporate transparency and compliance.
- AI, Privacy and the Practice of Law
The second panel will explore the transformative effects of AI on legal practice and privacy. Erin Santana, Global HR Leader at Alphabet Inc. (Google), and Goli Mahdavi, Counsel at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, will provide insights into the evolving landscape of privacy regulations, the integration of AI in legal services, and the implications for the practice of law.
The symposium will open with welcoming remarks from distinguished leaders in the field: Margaret Francisco, Global Trade Compliance Director and Senior Counsel at Rocket Lab USA and John Van Geffen, Attorney IV for the Public Advocates Office at the California Public Utilities Commission. The day will conclude with closing remarks delivered by Theresa Leets, Assistant Chief Counsel at the Department of Financial Protection & Innovation, providing a reflective summary of the discussions and key takeaways from the symposium.
The symposium will offer 2.5 hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits, including 1.25 hours focused on Technology in Legal Practice. Attendees will benefit from networking opportunities with top experts, gain practical knowledge to navigate these challenges, and engage in forward-thinking discussions that will shape the future of legal practice.
