JOHN F. HARTIGAN RECEIVES BUSINESS LAW SECTION’S 2023 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Mr. Hartigan is a partner in the Los Angeles Office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius where he advises clients on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, broker-dealer, investment advisor and securities law issues, and SEC enforcement matters. He has represented private equity funds, financial institutions, public and private companies and government entities. He also represents boards of directors and special committees in complex business transactions, corporate governance, sensitive internal investigations, responses to corporate activists and government investigations. He led the independent reviews of Drexel, Burnham, Lambert and other entities pursuant to their settlements with the SEC and other regulators.
Mr. Hartigan has served as Managing Partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office, a member of the firm’s Governing and Advisory Boards, and Co-Chair of the firm’s Securities Interdisciplinary Group. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, he was with the Securities and Exchange Commission for more than eight years and served, among other positions, as Assistant Director of the Division of Enforcement in Washington, D.C.
Active in professional organizations, Mr. Hartigan has been the President of the Association of Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni (ASECA), the General Counsel of the Bank Insurance & Securities Association, and on the Board of Visitors of Georgetown University Law Center. He has been Vice Chair and a member of the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California and Chair of its Education Committee. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA), Chair of the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of LACBA and Chair of the Annual Securities Regulation Seminar sponsored by the SEC and LACBA.
Mr. Hartigan has chaired, moderated and spoken on numerous programs including those sponsored by the California State Bar Business Law Section, ABA Business Law and Litigation Sections, ALI-ABA, Northwestern University Corporate Counsel Institute, UCLA Anderson School of Business, Practicing Law Institute, Georgetown Corporate Counsel Institute and many other organizations. He is a regular contributor to business and legal publications.
During the course of his career, Mr. Hartigan has been recognized for his professional activities and legal achievements by Chambers USA, (Mergers and Acquisitions), The Best Lawyers in America, The Legal 500, Martindale Hubbell (AV rating), Super Lawyers, Los Angeles Business Journal and other organizations. He has also been recognized for his professional activities and legal achievements by several organizations, including the Los Angeles County Bar Association (recipient of the Business Law Section Lifetime Achievement Award, LACBA Outstanding Trustee Award, Outstanding Section Chair Award and Marvin Greene Distinguished Service Award), the Association of Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni – West Coast Alumni, and the Bank Insurance & Securities Association (Circle of Excellence Award).
Following graduation with a degree in Finance with honors from the University of Illinois, Mr. Hartigan received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was case and notes editor and a member of the executive board of the law journal, The Tax Lawyer.
