Business Law Section Executive Committee Chair Report

California Lawyers Association (“CLA”) all in-person activities were suspended. The Business Law Section (“BLS”) has since operated remotely, with Standing Committees adapting to new operational protocol to continue to provide for constituents.

Although major BLS protocols have been changed, we continue to embrace technology and remain committed to ensure member engagement and facilitate communication.

Capitalizing on videoconferencing, BLS continued to host events with schools and other bar associations. This year BLS worked with California State University at Fullerton and Santa Clara University School of Law to provide students with an opportunity to meet with a panel of practicing attorneys. BLS also co-sponsored Latina Judges: Breaking Barriers & Achieving Success, featuring Superior Court of San Francisco County Judge Suzanne R. Bolanos, Superior Court of San Diego County Judge Patricia Garcia, US District Court for the Northern District of California Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, Superior Court of Orange County Judge Elizabeth G. Macias, and Superior Court of Los Angeles County Judge Connie R. Quinones. The event was sponsored by over thirteen Latino/Hispanic affinity bar associations, the California Latino Judges Association, the California Minority Counsel Program, and local law firms.

In addition to its own efforts, BLS representatives remain active participants on various CLA-wide initiatives, including the Privacy Working Group, the Diversity Outreach Committee, the Racial Justice Committee, and the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee.

This year was faced with a series of particularly challenging issues that may not find resolution in the near term. While there may be a vaccine for this virus, there are no easy solutions to the many fissures revealed by our stressed systems. In the meantime, this brief summary of activities is a testament to the focus and energy of BLS practitioners who choose to respond by taking action: building networks, engaging in their communities, and sharing legal developments.
